Flamboyance by Julie Freeman was awarded Outstanding Pastel in the August 2019 BoldBrush Painting Competition.

Julie is a self taught artist and over the years has developed her skills especially in the medium of pastels. Her love of realism is evident. She is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Artists of New Zealand (MPANZ ), a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America PSA and recently gained Master Status with the International Association of Pastel Societies IAPS. She has had much success with national and international awards. Her artwork is in private collections in the UK, USA, and NZ.

Julie's fascination with realism started as a child, she remembers clearly the enjoyment and sense of achievement in sketching and painting realistic pictures. Pastel became her favourite medium many years ago while living in the United States and England where she was doing commissioned animal portraits, initially using black and white. When she broadened her subjects, began using colour and more specifically pastel pencils, her work began to be recognised.

Julie is currently creating work with the intent of realism beyond the photograph. She uses her own reference photos, and when she is not in the studio at the easel, she will be off on a photographic trip with her husband around the New Zealand countryside, looking for inspiration, and it is not hard to find.  Her subject matter is varied, from coastal and nautical to the natural fauna and flora of NZ, but if asked she would say she has an affinity with painting animals.

Currently Julie is teaching workshops on request and offers private tuition from her studio.

Julie exhibits regularly throughout the year, and she is also represented by
