    Biography

I am a painter/mixed media/pastel artist living and working in western Wisconsin. My work lies in a precarious balance between chaos and compositional control. Images can go spiraling out of control at any given point of my process. The challenge is to reign it all in to an acceptable state of clarity. This takes a lot of building up of surfaces and marks, only to tear it back down again when the disparate elements all want to have their own say. The inspiration is from within - what I am feeling over what I believe I may know. Patterns, marks and the tools used to make my images are intentionally random and effortlessly chosen. It takes so much effort to walk through this earth – I need my art to be the one place where I can freely be myself.

My process involves working on 2 – 3 pieces at a time. Currently, I shift between working with acrylic on canvas and oil, cold wax and mixed media on paper or panel. With each medium, I concentrate on one piece and begin the additional work or two with the extra paint left on my palette. This results in a miniseries based on the palette, but not necessarily on the composition. Composition is unique to each piece as it is developed intuitively during the process of each piece. I find that shifting from acrylic to the cold wax medium informs the textures and tool methods used between the two mediums. I’ve discovered ways to make the acrylic work like cold wax and vice versa. The layering process is very similar between the two mediums as well. I try to leave at least some areas of all my works with a glimpse of each step of the work process – a sort of visual mapping of my decision making.

The titles of my pieces come to me when the works are finished. I am coming to understand that imagery relates directly to my relatively recent focus on the mind with all of its distortions and disorders. As soon as I finish a piece – I can see how the image is visual interpretation of all of the mind’s complexities and confusion. Trying to explain how our minds work is just as complex and vague as the abstract compositions of my artwork. During the process of my work – decisions are affected by my own emotions of the moment. If I don’t feel calm and collected – the artwork I am working on is definitely not going to display that message. I think it’s interesting to hear how people respond to my work. They definitely bring their own experience into what they believe the meaning to be. I may have been in the most troubled state of mind while working on a piece and I will receive comments about how “joyful” the imagery is. I enjoy the contradictory responses to my work as much as the ones that “get it”. They (the responses) make me take a second or third look at the work to see if I can find that thought or emotion in any given piece. I’ve always been attracted to artwork that makes me think and ponder its imagery for a long time. Abstract work has done that more for me than representational or realistic art. I love the questions brought up by abstraction.
