    Tim Saternow is an American painter whose watercolor paintings explore the lost and forgotten areas on the edges of the urban scene. His work encompasses the old High Line train trestles above the gritty industrial streets of New York City, the empty homesteads of Joshua Tree, California, and the dignified and genial old houses of Provincetown, MA. 

    Tim Saternow, AWS, is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society, Elected Member of the Allied Artists of America, and a Signature Artist of the Hudson Valley Art Association. His work has been exhibited throughout the US and Internationally, including the American Watercolor Society Traveling Exhibitions, 2016 & 2017; The Brattleboro Museum, Vermont; The William Benton Museum of Art, Storrs, Connecticut; the Prague Quadrennial, The Czech Republic; and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, NY.

    Saternow was recently invited to the Sixth Biennial International Prize "Marche d'Acqua" Fabriano Watercolour 2018, Fabriano, Italy Fabriano, Italy, and to the 2017 The Lake-Blue Heaven: Qingdao International Spring Art Salon, in Qingdao, China, where he received the Bronze Award in Watercolor, 2017.

    His work has appeared in numerous publications including Watercolor Artist (April 2017), The Art of Watercolour Magazine, Naintré, France (June 2015); American Artist Water Color Magazine (Winter 2012); the books Art Journey America, and Splash 12, 13, 18 & 20: The Best of Watercolor, among others. 

    Awards received: American Watercolor Society: Bronze Medal of Honor, and the Walser S. Greathouse Medal; The Hudson Valley Art Association, Joyce Williams Achievement Award; The Allied Artists of America, Gold and Silver Medals.    Other awards were First Place in the Watermedia Competition from Watercolor Artist Magazine, and awards at the Art Students League, New York.   A Resident Artist Grant was awarded in 2012 by BoxoPROJECTS, Joshua Tree, CA.  

    In Saternow’s TV and Film design, he received an Emmy Award Nomination for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Art Direction, for The Piano Lesson, by August Wilson, Hallmark Hall of Fame/CBS Television; and received numerous awards for his theatre set & lighting design, including many Broadway and Regional Theatre credits.

    As a teacher, Saternow taught graduate level Theater Design and Art Direction at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, and Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA.  He has taught numerous painting, drawing, linear perspective workshops and master classes in watercolor throughout New York and across the country. 

    Saternow received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama, Yale University, and his BFA from SUNY Purchase, NY.   He is a recipient of Lahey Memorial Scholarship from the Art Students League, New York, NY, studying with Paul Ching-Bor.   He is also a Board Member of The American Watercolor Society and is currently represented by the Kobalt Gallery, Provincetown, Mass.    

    He is currently a Fellow with The Clark Hulings Fund’s Art-Business Accelerator Program, 2019.
